Technical Assessments

When a visually impaired person starts a new job, or preferably before they start, it is essential to carry out an assessment of what access technology will enable them to carry out their job most effectively — giving job satisfaction and adding value to the organisation at the same time.

Aspire firmly believes that it is necessary to spend as much time as possible with the person being assessed. This in order to gain information about their working environment, what their job entails, any current difficulties they are having with the job, any knowledge they already have of access technology products and so on. We also believe that it is important to discuss their role with their manager wherever possible.

In order to carry out an effective assessment, we would recommend spending a day with the person. This will provide the opportunity for in-depth discussions and for a range of access technology solutions, such as screen readers, screen magnification software and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) packages, to be demonstrated thoroughly using a laptop computer.
